Rethinking the Fundamentals of Second-Language Chinese Learning

MetaChinese Institute investigates how the structure of language and the architecture of human learning can inform a more principled science of Chinese language education.

Operating as a research initiative under a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, MetaChinese Institute seeks to develop a coherent theoretical and pedagogical framework for second-language (L2) Chinese acquisition.

Our research examines two fundamental questions: How should instruction reflect the structural properties of the Chinese language? And how can it align with the cognitive mechanisms through which learners recognize patterns, construct meaning, and develop transferable knowledge?

Our Research Framework

Two Alignments. One Coherent System.

Linguistic Alignment

Instruction must reflect the structural properties of the language being learned. Chinese writing organizes linguistic information through recurring components and meaningful relationships. These structures offer resources for learning that are often underutilized when characters are taught as isolated forms.

Cognitive Alignment

Instruction must also account for how human cognition processes and organizes information. By directing attention to meaningful patterns and connecting new information to existing knowledge, learning can move beyond the accumulation of disconnected items toward increasingly coherent and reusable mental representations.

Beacon–Anchor Theory

A theoretical framework for meaningful signal recognition and knowledge formation.

Beacon–Anchor Theory examines how learners transform unfamiliar linguistic input into stable, meaningful knowledge. Drawing on cognitive science and information theory, it describes how instruction can make recurring linguistic signals salient (beacons), connect them to established meaning (anchors), and support their gradual internalization through repeated encounters across contexts.

The framework seeks to explain how structural alignment and meaningful anchoring can reduce learning uncertainty, support retention, and enable knowledge transfer.

Structural Literacy

An instructional framework grounded in the internal structure of writing systems.

Structural Literacy holds that literacy instruction should align with the structural encoding principles of the writing system being learned.

For Chinese, this means making the meaningful structures and relationships within and across characters explicit. Rather than approaching characters primarily as isolated visual forms, learners develop a systematic understanding of recurring components and how they combine to convey meaning, building interconnected knowledge that can support recognition, interpretation, and further learning.

Our Mission

To advance research and educational practice in second-language Chinese acquisition by developing and investigating frameworks grounded in linguistic structure and human cognition.

Research & Scholarship

MetaChinese Institute builds on more than a decade of interdisciplinary inquiry, educational design, and classroom practice led by its founder, Dr. Haiyan Fan.

The work has evolved from developing and applying structural approaches to Chinese learning to articulating the underlying principles through Beacon–Anchor Theory and Structural Literacy.
